Unikko was born in 1964 when floral prints were practically forbidden territory at Marimekko. Naturally, Maija Isola responded by creating one of the most beloved flowers in design history.

As head designer, she created over 500 patterns—including the iconic Unikko (“Poppy”)—turning everyday motifs into fearless, oversized graphics. Bold, colorful, and unapologetic, her prints didn’t just decorate fabric, they made Marimekko famous and redefined what pattern could be.
